valentines with the children

Valentine's day, also called Saint Valentine's or the feast of Saint Valentine is celebrated on the 14th of February every year. The festival was believed to begin in Rome. The Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia between february 13 and 15. Men sacrificed 2 animals - a dog and a goat - and whipped women whips made from the hides of the sacrifices. Women actually wanted to be hit by these men and believed that this whipping would make them fertile. There were also matchmaking lotteries and people were coupled up for the duration of the festival. If all went well, they were together for longer.

Emperor Claudius II executed 2 men who were both named Valentine on February 14th in the 3rd  century. The Catholic church honored these martyrs and celebrated St.Valentines day. Despite the dark history behind this day, I choose to view this as a celebration of love. To me, valentines is all about spreading love and joy to those around me.

I came across an article about how we can send sick children in St.Jude's children's hospital greeting cards to cheer them up and I decided to do it. I went to their website and chose a template and wrote a message for it. It was a simple thing but its the thought that matters here. I was able to be empathetic and be a principled and caring person.
